Class Questions

In class: Collaborate with your group members to answer the following questions. Only one group member needs to record the group answers but be sure it is someone different each week. Record the name of all group members who are present and contribute. DO NOT INCLUDE THE NAMES OF STUDENTS IN YOUR GROUP WHO ARE ABSENT.

Absent? You are responsible for doing the class questions on your own. Be sure you have written in complete sentences. Remember! You have two days for each day you miss to complete work.

 

To Accompany Task Sheet 1:

1. Where is the novel set? Describe the setting in detail. Be sure to include where and when the novel takes place including city, state, country, time
period, etc.

2. Describe the main characters in your novel. Be sure to tell their names, physical description, age, and other important details you've learned so far.

3. Based on what you've read so far, what is your honest opinion of your novel. Explain and give at least one example from the text.

 

To Accompany Task Sheet 2:

1. What type of plot does the novel have based on what you've read so far? How do you know. Be sure to support and give evidence for the type you've chosen.

2. Which character do you respect the most? Explain your choice in detail using at least one quote from your novel.

3. Which character do you respect the least? Explain your choice in detail using at least one quote from your novel.

 

To Accompany Task Sheet 3:

1. What three questions would you like to ask the author or one of the characters from your novel? Write out the three questions and then choose or predict what you think their answer might be.

2. After several years pass, what do you think you'll remember about this book? Why? Be sure to explain your answer.

3. What genre is your book? How do you know? What type of reader would enjoy this book? Explain your answer. Be sure to include whether the book is best suited for males/females, children/teens/adults, what kinds of things might he or she be into, etc.

 

To Accompany Task Sheet 4:

1. Explain the significance of the title of your novel. How does in connect to the plot? Support your explanation using quotes from your novel. (5 points)

2. Re-write the back cover of your novel. What should it say to capture the essence of your novel but not give everything away. You might consider using an imporant quote or looking for what critics have said about your book. Be sure you have at least 5-7 sentences per paragraph. You must have: (10 points)

1. 2 paragraphs

2. A captivating quote

3. Find a real critic's review of your novel

 

To Accompany Task Sheet 5:

1. What did you learn through the course of reading your novel? This could be facts about WWII, the Holocaust, a country, a culture or maybe you've even come to think about something in a different way. Write a detailed summary what you've discovered.

2. What moment held the biggest surprise for you? Consider plot twists, what a character witnessed, survived, or accomplished, themes, or outcomes. Why was this such a surprise to you? Be sure to explain and include at least one quote in your answer.

3. Why did this novel hold your interest? If the novel did not hold your interest, what would make the book more interesting for you? Think about organization, writing style, etc. Discuss specific situations where things were lacking or that you thought were done well. Be sure to use the text to support your answer.

To Accompany Task Sheet 6:

1. How did this novel give you a better understanding of human nature? Be sure to give at least two examples; One should show the positive side of human nature and the other should show the darker side.

2. What is stronger in your book-- plot development or character development? Be sure to thoroughly explain your answer.

3. Define theme. Then share one theme from your novel. Remember that a theme must be a complete sentence. Explain how your theme is evident in your novel. Be sure to include support from the text.

 

To Accompany Task Sheet 7:

1. Define climax. What was the climax of your novel? Be sure to support your answer using your text.

2. What are the most important relationships in your novel? Why? How did these relationships help/hurt your characters?

3. At the end of your book, do you feel hope for your characters? Predict what might happen to them after the events in the novel. Be sure to explain why you do or do not feel hope for your characters and use the text to support your predictions.
