Symbolism in To Kill a Mockingbird

A symbol is an item or action that stands for something else. Atticus and Jem have different interpretations of the Camellia bloom that Mrs. Dubose leaves for Jem when she dies in chapter 11. While Jem is initially angered and repulsed, Atticus views it as a conciliatory, forgiving gesture.

Task: Research the Camellia flower and write a 3-5 paragraph analysis. Include what you found in your research, and the conclusions you reach about the symbolism of this flower. Why does Mrs. Dubose leave this flower for Jem? What do you think the camellia symbolizes? Why does Harper Lee choose this flower rather than another one such as a rose or a carnation? Be sure to provide information from the novel to support your conclusions. Paper must be typed and is due on or before *March 18, 2011. ( Up to 20 points possible)

  • Be sure you have a fitting title (no underline and no quotation marks!)
  • Be sure you have an introduction with a thesis statement.
  • Be sure there are transitions between paragraphs.
  • Do not use the words: I, me, my, you, we, quote, sentence, paper or essay
  • Be sure you have an introduction, body and conclusion
  • Be sure to use at least three quotes from the book and to include their page numbers

*PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE AS THE ASSIGNMENT IS EXTRA CREDIT AND ALREADY AN EXTRA OPPORTUNITY.
