Frau Miller

My name is Dubravka Miller and I will be teaching the German I class at Nagel Middle School this year.  I also teach Spanish II at Turpin High School.  This is my eighth year with the Forest Hills School District.

GOALS:  Students will learn to speak, read and write using basic German vocabulary as they talk about themselves and the world around them.  Students will learn about German culture and be able to make comparisons and connections to their own culture.  Students will practice communicating with each other and the teacher orally and in short written passages.  Students will practice listening to native speakers and each other. Students will use cognates, contextual clues and vocabulary to scan and read short passages.  Study skills will be enhanced as students practice taking notes, memorizing vocabulary and learning and retaining information on a long term basis.

GRADING: Grades are determined by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible.  If a student misses a quiz, he/she must make it up  before school.  Cheating will result in a 0 for that particular assignment or quiz for both parties involved.

OVERVIEW OF GRADES:

  • Homework will be checked daily and will be worth 1 point.  Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday.
  • Weekly quizzes will be worth 15-30 points, depending on the quiz.  I will always give you at least a two day notice on upcoming quizzes.
  • Lesson tests will be worth 60-70 points.  I will give you at least a four day notice on upcoming lesson tests.

Class participation will be checked daily in two ways:  voluntary (@40-50 points per quarter) and involuntary (20 points per quarter).  You must participate daily in order to comprehend a foreign language.

Remember that this is a high school course and you will be receiving a grade that will appear on your high school transcript at the end of the school year.

STUDY TIPS:

  • Please ask for help as soon as you need it, do not get behind!!
  • Students must keep an organized binder with all the material that is handed out.  Organization is the key to success!!
  • Flash card for vocabulary memorization is strongly encouraged.
  • Students will have approximately 10 minutes of written homework and will be expected to spend another 10 minutes reviewing and studying vocabulary and grammar.
  • Grades will be posted on Progress Book and updated daily.

DISCIPLINE:  Students are expected to be respectful of the teacher, each other and the environment.  Failure to do so will result in the following:
1st offense:  verbal warning
2nd offense:  student-teacher conference, phone call to parent
3rd offense:  teacher detention, phone call to parent
4th offense:  referral to principal
