ESPAÑOL I
Señora Blanton
Dear Students and Families,
¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español I! Welcome to Spanish class! My name is Señora (Mrs.) Blanton. This is my sixth year teaching Spanish at Nagel Middle School. I have a BS in Spanish Education and a BA in Spanish from Ohio University, and recently earned my Masters of Arts in Education degree from Northern Kentucky University. I got married three years ago, so if older siblings were in Spanish I, you might not recognize my new name- I was formerly Señorita (Miss) Metti. I am looking forward to working with you and making this a busy, productive, and academically rewarding year. We will work together to cultivate self-discipline and academic excellence, two important attributes of a high school student.
Resumen de la Clase - Course Overview
La clase de español I is an exciting course in which students receive high school credit. At times, the coursework may seem challenging, but with persistence and effort, you will do well. Our goals for the year include exposure to and acquisition of Spanish, exploration of Spanish and Hispanic cultures, and promotion of cultural awareness and acceptance. Please understand that learning a new language takes numerous hours of practice, patience, and dedication. You will not be fluent by the end of the year; instead, you will have a solid foundation on which to build your Spanish.
Los Materiales - Materials
● Textbook - Realidades 1
● Workbooks – Guided Practice for Vocabulary and Grammar and Practice Workbook.
More information will be provided via a letter from the office; however, there is a one-time fee for these two workbooks. ($21.93) Parents may pay online with EZpay. To access this feature, please go to the Nagel Homepage, and click on “Parent Information” on the right-hand side of the top toolbar. From there, please click on SPS EZpay. ● Pencil and/or Pen
● Student Planner
El Horario de la Clase – Course Schedule
This year you will learn about the Spanish language and become familiar with different Hispanic cultures while making comparisons and connections to our own culture. You will also improve your Spanish grammar and vocabulary through various reading, writing, listening, and speaking exercises.
Las Reglas de la Clase – Class Expectations
Students are expected to be prompt, prepared, and polite. Remember your manners and your dignity in our classroom. You represent your family to us.
● Be seated and ready to work with your materials when the door closes and music stops, and remain until dismissed by the teacher.
● Listen and follow teacher directions the first time they are given.
● Treat others the way you like to be treated, keeping hands, feet, objects, and negative comments to yourself.
● Raise your hand to speak unless informed otherwise.
● Keep gum, eating, drinking, grooming, and note writing outside our classroom.
● Do quality work.
Las Consecuencias – Consequences
Consequences are the results of your own choices. The teacher has the right to teach and every student has the right to learn. If a student chooses not to follow procedures, the following consequences will be enforced.
● Verbal Warning and last person out the door
● Reflective writing assignment from the consequence binder
and a brief conference with Señora Blanton
● Parent notification
● Before or after school detention
● Conference with parent, student, and teacher
● Office Referral
● Severe clause: I reserve the right of immediate removal in the event of a serious violation of school or classroom rules (fighting, defying the teacher, vandalism, stopping the class from functioning…). We will follow the Nagel Middle School Handbook regarding school rules.
Las Ausencias y la poliza de completer trabajo - Absences and Make-up Work
Attendance is of great importance! If you are out, be sure to have your parent/guardian call to excuse your absence. See a classroom “buddy” for notes or information about what you missed. Check the make-up work folders for any materials you might have missed. Excused absences will receive time for make-up. For each missed day, students will receive two days to make up work.
La Tarea tarde – Late Work
As we prepare for high school, we must realize that late work is not the mark of a self-disciplined student. Late work (except homework) loses one letter grade per day. No credit will be awarded for late homework. Please have your assignments completed before you arrive in class!
Llegar tarde – Tardies
Each student will be given one free tardy per quarter (4 total during the school year). Excessive tardies will result in consequences.
Las Notas – Grades
You will earn your grades in this course based on your performance on daily classwork, bellwork, nightly homework, attendance, class participation, quizzes, tests, and individual and group projects.
All grades are determined on the basis of a point system, and the point total is converted to a letter grade at the end of the grading period. There will be opportunities for bonus points on all quizzes and tests. Please be advised that you must do your own work to the best of your ability. Cheating and/or plagiarism will result in disciplinary consequences.
Grading Scale: The grading scale will follow that of the district.
93-100% A
85-92% B
76-84% C
70-75% D
Below 70% F
